FRANKFORT – In a Sagamore Conference thriller that saw five missed extra points – including the final one by Frankfort that would have tied the game – Class 3A No. 10 Western Boone got 198 yards rushing and three touchdowns from Jared Knox to remain undefeated and spoil the hosts’ Homecoming with a 26-25 victory.

The Stars (5-0 overall and 3-0 in league play) raced out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter, an advantage that included a pair of successful PATs by Thomas Garrity, on Knox runs of three and 59 yards. But the host Hot Dogs responded with TD runs of nine and 85 yards in the second period by running back Korben Shirar (21 carries, 175 yards), although two missed extra points only cut the deficit to 14-12.
After a lengthy Western Boone drive that reached the Frankfort 5, quarterback Tyler Aguirre’s pass was intercepted on the goal line by the Hot Dogs’ Blake Ayers with just 1:30 left before halftime. But Frankfort’s misfortunes continued as Western Boone’s Ryan Knox returned a fumble 25 yards for a touchdown to make the score 20-12 at intermission following yet another failed PAT.
Western Boone defensive coordinator Don Jackson emphasized the importance of the returned fumble after the game.
“We felt we had to match their intensity, and that play helped change the momentum,” said Jackson, who added that getting a stop on Frankfort’s first possession of the second half also was big for the Stars.
That momentum led to a one-yard run by Jared Knox, who carried the load for Frankfort with 32 rushes, and a 26-12 lead in the third quarter following yet another botched extra point.
Frankfort running back Dylan Timmons scored on a two-yard run, and Dustin Rutledge’s only successful PAT kick of the night cut the deficit to 26-19 in the final quarter. That was followed by a 46-yard scoring run from Josh Laughner with 5:41 left to play, but the evening’s final failed kick made for a one-point margin.
After linebacker Johnny Varner made a key 4th-and-inches tackle on Jared Knox, Frankfort had one last chance with 1:12 on the clock. But the opportunity vanished when Ayers threw an interception on 4th and long.
The 5-0 start is Western Boone’s best since the 1998 team went 14-1 and made it all the way to the state finals, where the Stars lost 28-0 to Jimtown.
Next up for Western Boone is a huge conference game Sept. 25 against visiting North Montgomery (4-1, 2-1), a 37-29 Week 5 loser at Lebanon. Frankfort will travel to Danville (1-4, 1-2), a 41-12 loser to Whiteland, next Friday night.
