BA: Big Innings Carry Frankfort Past Lebanon

Mike McGraw
Hoosier Authority

The runs came in bunches for the Frankfort Hot Dogs in their
11-8 victory over Lebanon
Tuesday evening. The Hot Dogs only scored in two innings, but they plated six
runs in the third and five in the sixth frame. Those two barrages were more
than enough to tame the Tigers.

The first outburst came after Lebanon had built a 5-0 lead by the
middle of the third. The Tigers scored three runs in the opening inning,
highlighted by a Britttian Warner RBI double. They added two more in the top of
the third. Frankfort
made short work of that margin with their six spot in the bottom if the inning.
The big blow was a grand slam home run by Dylan Henady.

Frankfort hurler No Click
then settled down and retired the next nine Lebanon batters in a row. That was
long enough for the Hot Dogs to again erupt in the bottom of the sixth inning. This
time it was Click aiding his own cause when he clubbed a 3RBI triple. It was
only one of four hits for Click who was a perfect 4-4 at the plate on this day.

Lebanon
rallied for five runs in the seventh, but it was far from enough. The victory
was Frankfort
opening win in league play. The back end of the two game series will be in Lebanon on
Thursday.

BB: West Lafayette Downs Frankfort

Frankfort Times

Everything was running smoothly for the Frankfort baseball team through
three innings.

In fact, the Hot Dogs had just closed to 2-1 on a RBI
single by Alex Palmer.

But then the flood gates blew open for West
Lafayette. The Red Devils scored six runs in the fourth and 11 in the fifth to
cruise to a 19-1 victory Friday night in five innings.

In the fateful
fourth inning, five of WL’s six runs came with two outs. Garrett Van Sickel
started it off with an RBI single to score Andrew Pekny. With two runners on for
Daniel Wodicka, he hit a ground ball in between third baseman Bo Click and
Palmer. Palmer retrieved it, but his wild throw to first base allowed both
runners to score and Wodicka advanced to third. Palmer walked to next two
batters, Taylor Kehl and Matt Lancaster, and that was all for the
junior.

“He was on a low pitch count, and we threw him for longer than we
planned,” Frankfort coach Andy Dudley said. “I wanted to see him work through
some bugs mechanically. He made the changes and he’s just going to have to get
comfortable to the 80-90 pitch count we’ll use in conference.”

Freshman
Alec Stuard finished the inning.

In the fifth inning, Frankfort pitchers
Juan Guillen and Tanner Svoboda struggled to find the plate, combining to walk
six batters. They also hit three batters. West Lafayette scored 11 runs on four
hits, with the biggest being a three-run homer by Matt Lancaster off
Guillen.

Stuard, Guillen and Svoboda all saw time on the mound because
Dudley is in the process of getting his rotation ready for conference, which
starts Tuesday against Danville.

“We didn’t want to throw varsity
pitching after we got to a certain point,” Dudley said. “It’s a preseason game
for us. I wanted to get some guys some innings and see what we
have.”

Palmer picked up the loss, allowing eight runs (four earned) on
five hits in 3 2/3 innings.

Frankfort only recorded two hits in the
game, with Dustin Rutledge slapping a single in the second inning.

Dudley did see a few positives with his team’s play.

“I felt
like our knowledge of the strike zone was better,” Dudley said. “We put the ball
in play and moved guys over and our baserunning was better.”

Emilio
Domondon was dominant once again for West Lafayette, striking out eight while
walking two.

Lancaster had three hits to lead West Lafayette. Kyle Butler
and Van Sickel had two each.

Frankfort plays host to Clinton Prairie at
noon today.

SB: Crawfordsville Holds On To Sweep Frankfort

 John Groth
Sport Editor
Paper of Montgomery County

Opposing
runners better not test Crawfordsville High School catcher Elizabeth
Zachary.

She’s been working on a quicker release – and the Athenians’
junior provided some game-saving heroics with her quick trigger arm Wednesday
night.

Zachary hit a two-RBI triple in the top of the sixth inning, then
threw out a runner in the bottom of the seventh inning to help Crawfordsville
hold on for an 8-7 victory – and series sweep – over conference rival Frankfort.
Crawfordsville won the first game 5-1.

“This year, I’ve been working on
really getting up and then throwing faster,” said Zachary, who threw out three
runners in the doubleheader sweep Wednesday. “I stood up a little too much and
the ball went high on that (seventh-inning) throw. I didn’t mean to
though.”

Crawfordsville (4-0) survived – and kept its undefeated record
and now-perfect conference record intact.

After jumping out to a 5-0 lead
in the first inning, the Athenians watched as the Hot Dogs chipped away, scoring
runs in the first, second and fourth innings to tie the game at 5-5 and then
take the lead.

Sophomore Chelsea Day struggled with her control in the
cold – throwing seven wild pitches and issuing 11 walks.

But thanks to
Zachary and sophomore pitcher Marissa French’s late-inning performance, they
hung on.

With two outs and two runners on base in the top of the sixth
inning, Zachary drilled a two-RBI triple to leftfield, giving the Athenians an
8-5 cushion. It was just enough.

Frankfort rallied for a run in the
bottom of the fifth and then scored one more with no outs in the bottom of the
sixth.

That’s when Crawfordsville coach Brian Norris took out Day and
put in French.

French fended off a cold and then gave up an RBI single,
before striking out the final three batters in the sixth inning.

And in
the seventh, she got some defensive help – with a line-drive catch by senior
Haley Fink at second base and a dig and scoop by junior Stormy Staton at first
base for the final out of the game.

“I just thought ‘I’ve got to focus,”
French said. “I had to get strikes and I had to push myself. I put my sickness
aside and I just pitched.”

In the opening game, Staton turned in a
dominating pitching performance to earn her first home win.

She struck
out 10 Hot Dogs and pitched a one-hitter in a 5-1 victory, giving up her lone
hit and run – an RBI single to Frankfort freshman Caitlyn Pearcy – in the top of
the first inning.

After allowing that run, Staton (2-0) shut Frankfort
down. She allowed just three bases runners the next six innings (all who reached
on errors).

“Anytime someone gets a hit, scores a run or I give up a
walk, it tells me that I need to start doing something quick,” Staton said. “It
gets me going.”

Staton also received some defensive help from Zachary.

Zachary threw out two runners – freshman Cara Conklin at second base to
end the top of the fourth inning and pitcher Brittany Leach at third base in the
top of the sixth inning.

Crawfordsville benefited from four Frankfort
errors, scoring four of its five runs off errors. The Athenians next play
Tuesday at conference rival Tri-West.
