BXC: Frankfort Bound For State Finals

As team scores were being rattled off from 20th place on down,
Frankfort coach Tim Galati figured his team had somewhere around 220
points.

He didn’t know if that’d be good enough to get his
squad to the state finals. Luckily, his “guesstimation” was a little
off – in a good way.

When it was announced that the
seventh-place team was Western, the Hot Dogs boys cross country team
started shouting and celebrating, so much that everyone was staring
awkwardly at them.

“I don’t know if that was because we were
being a little loud or they had announced our name at that point,”
Galati said. “I didn’t even hear if it was Western or West Lafayette, I
just heard the w-e-s part and our guys went crazy. It was just madness
from there.”

Galati is familiar with the semistate podium
stage, as he was there three times himself when he ran at Portage –
including two team championships. But this fourth time – his first as a
coach – was even sweeter than his high school days.

“I don’t
think any of those three times felt as good as it did yesterday to be
up there with those guys,” Galati said. “It was an experience with all
of them. They worked hard all year and being in that kind of position,
it’s not normal for any Frankfort team to go to a state meet.”

The last time a Frankfort squad advanced to the state finals was 2001 when the volleyball team accomplished the feat.

Combined with the rain and two races occurring before the boys race,
the course was a little tore up, but the Hot Dogs persevered.

They were paced by sophomore Javier Vasquez, who finished 19th (16:40).
Other finishers for Frankfort were Austin Cline in 25th (16:49), Ramon
Chairez in 40th (17:05), Andrew Ramos in 41st (17:05) and Kyle Zerfas
in 102nd (18:04).

Clinton Prairie’s Jamie Dority, racing as an individual, placed 113th (18:12).

None of the Hot Dog runners got off to a good start. Vasquez was
toiling in the 30s for the first mile and Cline and Ramos were in the
50s. Chairez got the worst of it, getting caught in the back of the
pack and was in the 90-range.

“Ramon had a great last two miles
and was non-stop, mowing guys down and weaving his way through. I felt
much better after that. Before though, I was pretty nervous.”

McCutcheon won the semistate with 48 points, easily besting
Valparaiso’s 112 points. Chesterton was third (149), LaPorte fourth
(157), West Lafayette fifth (197) and Frankfort sixth (198). Western
(208) was seventh, 10 points back of the Hot Dogs.

LaPorte
junior Matthew Miller won the race in 15:53. Oak Hill’s Cameron Balser
was second (15:56), McCutcheon’s Ross Russell third (16:01),
Chesterton’s David Osborn fourth (16:02) and McCutcheon’s Robbie
Stewart fifth (16:05).

The state finals will take place
Saturday at the Wabash Valley Sports Center in Terre Haute. The girls
race will start at 1 p.m. with the boys expected to start at 1:45 p.m.
Admission is $8.

VB: Frankfort Wins Sectional For Second Straight Time

It was so much fun they decided to do it again. Frankfort cruised to
their second straight sectional title Saturday by sweeping Western in three
games. The Hot Dogs were as dominant as the scores indicate in their 25-14,
25-12, 25-12 victory.

This one was a complete team effort for Frankfort. Alex Thompson contributed 13 kills
and Ashleigh Ham was right behind with 10. Kiersten Ham continued her
exceptional setting, generating 30 assists in just three games. Senior Emily
Cunningham spearheaded the defensive effort.

The victory propels Frankfort
into the Plymouth Regional. The assignment will be a tall one. The Hot Dogs
face northern Indiana
power and frequent state finalist Mishawaka Marian in the first round.

FB: Only Three Sagamore Teams Survive First Round

Mike McGraw

Hoosier Authority

Only three Sagamore Conference teams remain after the first
round of sectional play Friday night. Overall, it was not a good night for
league teams, but it was a big night for one conference member. Southmont won a
sectional game for the first time in many years. Here is a round up of Friday
night’s action.

SOUTHMONT 21 GREENCASTLE 14 — The Mounties defense
stiffened after allowing 14 first quarter points. The Mounties rallied with two
second half touchdowns to prevail 21-14. The wines the fourth in a tow for
Southmont and propels them to a semi-final date with league rival Western
Boone.

WEST VIGO 14 CRAWFORDSVILLE
10 – The Athenians fell victim to the weather as much as the Vikings.
Crawfordsville could not get their passing attack going in the steady downpour
in West Terre Haute. They managed only 140
yards on the ground for the night. Their season ends at a disappointing 4-6.

NORTH MONTGOMERY 22 Brebeuf
10 — The Chargers took advantage of five Brebeuf turnovers. This one did not
resemble the shootout that everybody expected between the two high powered
offenses.

WESTERN BOONE33 DANVILLE 32—2/OT — The Stars made an extra
point and that seemingly was more difficult than a touchdown in this classic.
Tied at 20 after regulations, both teams scored in the first overtime and both
missed the PAT. Danville
scored to start the second extra session, but again misfired on the kick.
Western Boone answered the touchdown and completed the point after to advance
to round two.

Speedway
27 tri-west 7 — The Sparkplugs scored on their first drive two minutes into
the game and never looked back. Tri-West had trouble getting their running game
going throughout the evening.

PLAINFIELD 28 FRANKFORT 7 — The Hot Dogs could not stop the powerful Plainfield running
attack. The Quakers scored on four of their first five possessions and never
looked back.

Mooresville 35 Lebanon 0 — The Tigers improved a great
deal in the final weeks of the season. They did not, however, improve enough to
stop the rushing attack of Mooresville. The Pioneers improved to 8-2, scoring
on several big running plays.

VB: Frankfort Easily Moves Into Second Round Of Tourney

The Frankfort Hot Dogs flexed a little Sagamore muscle
Thursday night at the Twin
Lakes
sectional. Frankfort easily dismantled a quality West Lafayette team in three games, 25-18,
25-10, and 26-20. The victory moved the Hot Dogs into a semi-final date with
Benton Central on Saturday. It also improved their season mark to 24-10.

Contributions came from throughout the lineup on this
evening. However, the play of Alex Thompson surely stood out. Thompson ended
the match with 12 kills and 17 digs in just three games. Kiersten Ham added a
plentiful 28 assists to the effort.

BXC: Frankfort Boys Finish Second At Harrison Regional

LAFAYETTE – Frankfort did as well as anticipated and then some at Saturday’s Harrison Regional.

The boys cross country team placed three runners in the top 10 as the Hot Dogs improved from Tuesday’s sectional and brought home a second-place finish, good enough to advance to next Saturday’s New Prairie Semistate.

Clinton Prairie freshman Jamie Dority will also advance, finishing 14th with a time of 16:51.

For Frankfort, Javier Vasquez, Austin Cline and Ramon Chairez all finished in the top 10. Vasquez was fourth (16:19), Cline seventh (16:25) and Chairez 10th (16:35). That propelled the Hot Dogs past West Lafayette, beating the Red Devils, 55 to 60. McCutcheon won the event with 26 points.

“We’re not settled yet,” Cline said. “We still got semistate on our minds. We still have to beat West Lafayette next week. But we worked really hard for it, so we deserve it.”

Cline’s running was a big reason for the Hot Dogs’ second-place finish. He is normally the team’s No. 3 runner but slid in front of Chairez Saturday.

“It’s healthy for our team to trade positions and not settle in the mindset of being in a certain spot because that’s where you always are,” Frankfort coach Tim Galati said.

Andrew Ramos finished 13th (16:51) and Kyle Zerfas 22nd (17:29).

“This entire week, actually our entire career, we’ve been thinking about (going to state),” Ramos said. “We made semistate last year without any seniors and pushed ourselves the entire summer. We knew it wasn’t going to easy but we needed to place well and to close up the back end and we did.”

Galati thought that the cooler weather might have been the biggest advantage in putting the Hot Dogs ahead of WL.

“Our training has us set up to run better as we go through the next two weeks,” Galati said. “Our team has proven themselves time and time again in the big races. Last year was the first time since 1994 we made semistate. We have higher expectations this year.”

Also advancing to the semistate are Harrison with 110 points and Lafayette Jeff with 125.

Prairie’s Dority continues his strong late-season run with his 14th-place finish. Prairie coach Bobby Smith said Dority would need to run the time he did Tuesday to advance, and he actually ran a second faster.

“To have a freshman put back-to-back 16:50s is nice to see,” Smith said. “You got to give him credit for being so consistent and so dependable. As a freshman, he’s starting to gain confidence. What he did last week gave him a lot of confidence. He’s probably as good a freshman as we’ve had.”

McCutcheon’s Robby Stewart won the race in 15:47.

GXC: Hot Dogs barely miss berth to semistate

Frankfort’s girls lost their chance to compete in the New Prairie Semistate after losing Oct. 18 to Carroll (Flora) and Benton Central at the Harrison (West Lafayette) Regional.

Frankfort defeated Carroll in the Oct. 14 sectional round, but this time Carroll was ready for the Hot Dogs. This time, Carroll came out on top of the trio of teams with 122 points, while Benton Central finished with 144 and Frankfort had 148 points. That left the Dogs in sixth place overall, just out of semistate reach.

The final standings for the event were as follows: West Lafayette 46 points, including the top three individual spots, with Harrison (60) second and Lafayette Jefferson (110) third.

Two of West Lafayette’s runners, Kelsey Lewark and Linsey Daluga, set new course records. Lewark won the race in 18:20:15, followed closely by Daluga at 18:20:80. The previous course record was 18:34.

BXC: Frankfort Gives Strong Performance, Advances To Regional

Reprinted Courtesy of:
Frankfort News

LAFAYETTE – After the way his team ran at Tuesday’s Harrison Sectional,
Frankfort’s Javier Vasquez was ready to make a proclamation.

“I
know we’re going to state,” the sophomore said shortly after the Hot
Dogs’ third-place finish was good enough to advance to Saturday’s
regional. “This was the first step there and there’s two more to go.”

Frankfort’s top four runners – Vasquez, Ramon Chairez, Andrew Ramos and
Austin Cline – essentially ran as a pack as all placed between 6-12.
Vasquez was the team’s top finisher in sixth with a time of 16 minutes,
24 seconds. All four of them finished in under 17 minutes, a feat in
which Frankfort coach Tim Galati said has probably hasn’t happened
since the 1970s – the last time the Hot Dogs won a sectional title.

“We’re definitely looking good here in the postseason,” Galati said.
“When we can keep our No. 3 and No. 4 runners in front of the other
team’s three and four, that helps a lot. As long as our fifth runner
can maintain, we can have a very good postseason.

“Running as a pack should help us in big races.”

Cline was ninth (16:42), Chairez 10th (16:42) and Ramos 12th (16:45).
Ramos made a hard charge at the end and broke his own personal record
by a blistering 36 seconds.

“Good time to do it,” Galati said. “Definitely a defining race for him at this point.”

They will be joined Saturday by Clinton Prairie’s Jamie Dority, who
advanced as an individual by placing 15th, passing teammate Miles Biery
in the final 40 yards of the race.

Kyle Zerfas placed 34th as Frankfort’s No. 5 runner.

To reach sixth place, Vasquez once again made his move late at the end
of the race, passing a couple runners on his way. His strong kick at
the end is something the sophomore has down pat at this point.

“Even though I got sixth and I didn’t get fourth place, which is what I
wanted, I’m still happy,” Vasquez said. “I’m in shock of Ramos’ run. He
hasn’t been under 17 (minutes) ever. I’m so proud for him right now.”

Fourth-ranked McCutcheon easily won the meet with 20 points. West
Lafayette was second with 62. Frankfort’s 71 points put them third,
followed by Harrison (111) and Lafayette Jefferson (149). All five
advance to the regional.

Prairie was expected to battle for the
fifth spot, but had some unexpected slip-ups. Biery, who has been
Prairie’s top runner all year, was hobbled by a knee injury, allowing
Dority to get the late pass. Dority’s time was 16:51 while Biery’s was
16:52. Adam Schrock placed 40th (17:56), M.H. Wright 43rd (18:14) and
Alex Jackson 48th (18:38).

Rossville finished eighth with 236 points and Clinton Central 10th with 285 points.

The Hornets’ Emerson Flohr was their top finisher at 29th (17:39). Wes
Delks was 42nd (18:12), Nate Buckmaster 47th (18:30), Dylan Disinger
58th (19:32) and Robbie Hawkins 65th (20:43). For Central, Aaron Rogers
was the Bulldogs’ top finisher at 28th (17:38). Rhett Miller was 59th
(19:34), Jacob Quick 64th (20:28), Dillion Evans 70th (22:26) and Adam
Robinson 71st (22:36).

FB: Tri-West holds off Frankfort, 27-21

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director

LIZTON – The Frankfort offense, which has struggled much of this season, burst into full bloom for 39 minutes of the Hot Dogs’ Oct. 10 game at Tri-West Hendricks. Unfortunately for Frankfort fans, their team was down 17-0 after the first nine minutes.

It was too big a hole for the upset-minded visitors to overcome. Tri-West survived a major scare and won the Sagamore Conference battle, 27-21. (CHECK OUT THE VIDEO PLAYER ON OUR STATE PAGE FOR VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS!)

The win leaves Tri-West (6-2) in a three-way tie with Crawfordsville and Lebanon, all of whom stand 4-2 in Sagamore play. With the loss Frankfort falls to 1-7 overall and 1-5 in league play, tied with Western Boone for seventh.

One could hardly have imagined the effective offense Frankfort displayed after seeing its first possession of the game. Starting at their own 28-yard line, the Hot Dogs endured a five-yard penalty on first down, fumbled the snap on the replayed first down, took a seven-yard loss on second down, called a timeout before third down to avoid a delay penalty, and had a bad snap on the fourth down punt that kept it from ever being kicked.

You knew it had to get better because it couldn’t get any worse.

Inheriting the ball on the Frankfort 16, Tri-West quickly took advantage. A 35-yard field goal gave the hosts a very quick 3-0 lead.

It didn’t take long for the Bruins to pad that margin – they found the end zone on both of their next two possessions as running back Caleb Ross (16 carries, 93 yards) scored on runs of two and eight yards.

The score was 17-0 before many of the fans had even settled into their seats. It seemed as if the rout this game appeared to be on paper was taking shape.

Nothing, however, could have been further from the truth. On its next possession and trailing now by three possessions, the Frankfort offense that had been so inept early on suddenly began gouging the Tri-West defense for large chunks of yardage.

The Hot Dogs moved quickly down the field and scored just before the end of the opening period on a 17-yard scamper from running back Brody Click (17 rushes, 144 yards). The quarter ended with Tri-West holding a 17-7 lead.

Despite getting its offense kick-started, it looked as though Frankfort would have trouble getting back into the game. That is because the Hot Dogs showed no signs of being able to stop a very balanced Tri-West offense.

The Bruins wasted little time moving back down the field and restoring their 17-point lead on a 10-yard run by Ross. There were nine and a half minutes left in the first half, and the Bruins had scored each of the four times they possessed the ball.

Frankfort, for its part, wasn’t getting the message. The Hot Dogs rode their new-found offensive momentum to another score on their next chance, this one on a one-yard plunge by Click to make the score 24-14 late in the quarter.

But they left too much time for the Bruin offense, and Tri-West responded with a field goal to end the half leading 27-14.

The Tri-West players probably hope that the camera shooting game film broke during halftime. That is because they would not light the scoreboard again on this night, though that certainly did not look like the case early in the third period.

The Bruins took the second half kickoff and, as they had in the first half, quickly marched into Hot Dog territory. This time, however, the drive was snuffed out on an interception by Frankfort’s Korbin Shirer at the Hot Dogs’ 20.

It was Frankfort’s turn to finish what it started. The Hot Dogs marched down the field and Click struck again, this time from 17 yards out. Suddenly it was 27-21, and Frankfort fans were smelling upset.

That was especially true when the Hot Dog defense suddenly stiffened and caused Tri-West to go three-and-out on its next possession.

It became the Bruins’ turn to bow their backs defensively, and they responded like champions. After being carved for most of the previous two quarters, Tri-West stiffened and forced Frankfort to punt.

The third quarter ended with the Bruins still clinging to a 27-21 lead.

Unable to move for more than a single first down, Tri-West punted again early in the fourth period. It was a great kick, pinning down Frankfort on its own 5 with a little over nine minutes to play.

The Hot Dogs then began a drive that makes football coaches proud. They methodically moved out of the shadow of their own goal line and set sail for paydirt. The Hot Dogs were not only moving toward a possible go-ahead score, but they were also using a lot of the remaining time on the clock.

The play of the game came on 3rd and 2 from the Tri-West 33. Click carried very close to a first down, but the play was nullified on by a holding penalty on Frankfort. Instead of 4th and very short, it was 3rd and 12.

The Hot Dogs struck for seven yards on third down, but they failed to convert on fourth. Tri-West took over and ran out the clock

The Frankfort comeback nearly overshadowed what was an exceptionally balanced attack by Tri-West. The Bruin passing game is becoming something teams will have to deal with at tourney time.

Next up for Tri-West is an Oct. 17 journey to Danville (2-6, 2-4), a 36-19 Week 8 loser to Lebanon. Frankfort, meanwhile, gets to wrap its regular season by trying to ruin the perfect year being had by Class 3A No. 4 North Montgomery (8-0, 6-0).

The Chargin’ Chargers are coming off a 48-27 victory over Crawfordsville that clinched the conference title.

Will either of these teams make any noise in the postseason? Share your thoughts on our Football message board.

BSOC: Frankfort Heads Into Tourney With Plenty Of Firepower

Somewhere in between this year and last year, Oscar Hernandez went from
working in Lebanon to becoming the Frankfort boys soccer team’s top
offensive threat.

Hernandez, a junior, has shown an
unbelievable knack for putting the ball in the back of the net. He has
scored 20 goals on the season, good for eighth in the state. Combine
that with his eight assists and he’s ninth in the state in points with
48 and 3.69 per game.

Not bad considering this is his first year playing soccer at Frankfort.

“My friends said come on, let’s play for the school and I said OK,” Hernandez said. “So I played this year and I like it.”

Another person who likes having Hernandez on the team is coach Eric
Hash. The first-year coach said Hernandez is a very physical player and
coachable.

“If I could genetically design an athlete, it’d be
Oscar,” Hash said. “He has all the physical attributes you could want.
He’s physical, tall, very fast, great body control and he stops and
cuts on a dime. He always gives 100 percent when we ask him.

“Obviously he’s played at some point in his life, but for this to be
his first year of high school and he’s got 20 goals with a couple games
left, that’s incredible.”

His scoring has come in bunches.
Hernandez tallied four goals in a victory over Danville and had two
against Tri-West, along with one other three-goal game.

“Early in the season we knew we had something with him,” Hash said. “As
the season kept going, we realized how good he really is and what he
can be. He’s still got another season.”

But Hernandez credits his teammates most for helping him get to where he is.

“They always try to pass the ball to me and get me the ball at the
top,” Hernandez said. “They always play hard and they look for me to
score.”

Along with playing soccer, Hernandez also handles kicking duties for the football team.

The Hot Dogs will start sectional play at 5:30 Thursday against
Lafayette Central Catholic. The Hot Dogs got the worst of the draw and
will have to play all three rounds

“Hopefully we can pick up
some momentum and hopefully we have a chance,” Hash said. “We’ve played
strong from time-to-time, but if we play to our potential, we have a
great chance of getting out of sectional.”

Hernandez is also optimistic about the team’s chances.

“We are playing good and always playing really hard,” Hernandez said. “I thin
