One can’t blame the Frankfort boys golf
team for feeling somewhat confident about their upcoming season.

Although the Hot Dogs finished fifth in the sectional last year, all five
varsity players from that meet return. The defending Clinton County
champs are ready for what should be an exciting season.

Frankfort will
be led by senior Alex Snyder, a fourth-year varsity player who advanced to
the regional as an individual last year.

“We want to go out there and have a really good year and win as much
as possible,” Snyder said. “One of our main goals is to make it
out of sectionals.”

Frankfort is also happy that the Sagamore
Athletic Conference meet will be played at The Trophy Club in Lebanon
this year. Assisting Snyder in reaching that goal will be fellow senior
Craig McBarnes.

“We’re going to be mentally tough and we have good experience,”
McBarnes said. “[Snyder and I] are going to be pretty good leaders to
the younger kids. The last few years, we’ve had a young team, so we’re
really going to be more experienced than other teams, which is important in
golf.”

Others fighting to fill out the roster include Caleb Robertson, Braxton
Heimbach, Kyle Stuard and Matt Kriel. An unknown for the Hot Dogs will be
Magnus Ahlin, a foreign exchange student from Sweden.

“Alex kind of turned the corner toward the end of last year with some
great rounds at the county meet at Deer Track,” Frankfort coach Dennis Mills said.

New coach Mills said since the team has only been outside for two
practices, he hasn’t been able to figure out who will play where.

Mills takes over for Steve Gentil, who coached the team for two seasons
after the retirement of Doc Heath. Mills has been around the game of golf
for 35 years, playing golf at Huntington North and Huntington College.
He led a junior program at Angel Hill Golf Course in Rossville and also
gave group lessons at the YMCA.

“It’s kind of a dream come true for me to coach a varsity team,”
Mills said. “It’s neat to be with a group of guys that are taking it
extremely seriously and are dedicated. The high expectations are neat.
We’re definitely going to have a promising season, I think.”

Mills said he hopes to be able to help the Hot Dogs turn bogeys into pars
and stay away from double bogeys, along with three-putts, two-chips and
penalty strokes.

“Staying away from those can salvage a good round,” Mills said.

Frankfort opens
up its season April 5 at the McCutcheon Invite.
