GBB Crawfordsville Defeats Frankfort, Caotures Sagamore Crown

 Mike McGraw
Executive Director

There are defining moments not only in each basketball game, but also in a season or career as well. Sometimes they define greatness. Sometimes they merely define character. There were plentiful examples off both Friday January 25th when Crawfordsville hosted Frankfort in a game to decide the Sagamore conference championship.

The first came in the early minutes of the second quarter. After suffering through a first quarter that saw them fail to score a field goal, Frankfort found themselves in a 23-8 hole against the state’s fourth ranked 3A team. It was not a position most teams would, or could, recover from. Frankfort is not most teams. The Hot Dogs came roaring back with an 18-2 run spanning four minutes, to take a 26-25 lead. Mark one up for character.

During the Hot Dogs sizzling comeback, high scoring Crawfordsville sophomore forward Alex Gasaway had been treated to a seat on the bench by Coach Darren Haas. Gasawy had failed to score a point in the contest prior to her departure. When Frankfort took the lead, Gasawy reentered the fray with three minutes remaining in the half. All she did in those three minutes was go on a personal 11-0 run to send the Athenians to the locker room for halftime leading 36-26. It was the type of performance that often takes a player to the next level in a career. Performance in the clutch is often an acquired talent.  Chalk up one defining moment of greatness.

That same term can be used to describe the performance of the entire Crawfordsville team in the third period.  The Athenians came out of the locker room intent on displaying why they are so highly regarded on the state level. They put on an offensive clinic in the third quarter. They tallied 22 points and dominated play, stretching their lead to twenty, 58-38, at the end of the quarter. It was the type of display which says “this is what we have worked all year to get to.” the kind that defines a season.

For those in the crowd who were ready to crown the hosts entering the fourth, they under estimated that character Frankfort had already displayed once during the evening. After a stern lecture from Coach Mike Niehaus, Frankfort took the court and proceeded to score the first ten points of the fourth quarter. Suddenly the lead was 58-48 and there were still four and a half minutes to play in the game.

It was senior Paige Thompson’s turn to step to the fore for Crawfordsville. Thompson’s all around play had been brilliant all evening. This time she came to the rescue with a five point burst that put the game out of reach. Just one more defining moment. From there, Crawfordsville slowed the tempo and completed a 67-53 victory.

Hoosier Authority talked with Gasaway and Thompson after the game. Their comments will be available on both the state and Sagamore Conference video players. Gasaway finished the game with 22 points. They were scored in a span of seventeen minutes. Thompson added 17 points to go along with her leadership. Frankfort put three players in double figures.

BB: WESTERN BOONE “STARS” TOO MUCH FOR HOT DOGS

FRANKFORT – Coaches vs. Cancer and Sagamore Conference contest between host Frankfort and the Western Boone Stars at Everett N. Case Arena Jan. 11 results in Western Boone winning 71-63 and remaining unbeaten in conference play.  Both schools entered the evening contest undefeated in conference action.

Coach Torrey Rodkey’s Stars are now 8-2 overall and a perfect 4-0 in the conference.  The Stars’ conference record places them in a first place tie with Danville.  As Rodkey indicated after the game, “We need to stay healthy through the regular season in order to make a run at the 3A 25 Sectional Championship.”

Although the Stars made 11 more turnovers than Frankfort (19 to the Hot Dogs’ 8) and were out-rebounded 34-31, the Stars were able to convert on 51% of their field goal attempts compared to Frankfort shooting only 42% in their own arena.  Frankfort even took 66 shots compared to just 43 attempts by the Stars.  As expected, coach Rodkey’s Stars were efficient.

Following a Frankfort timeout with 6:25 remaining in the second period, the Hot Dogs greatly picked-up their defensive intensity.  The Hot Dogs truly aggressive play resulted in the Stars only converting two of 15 possessions through early in the third quarter.  Trailing 32-18, Frankfort closed the first half with a 9-2 run.  The Hot Dogs continued their impressive comeback into the fourth quarter when freshmen “lightning in a bottle” Korben Shirar converted on a lay-up to tie the score at 50 with 6.42 remaining in the contest.

Frankfort achieved their first lead of the evening when junior Jay Sheets buried a three-pointer to make the score 55-54 with 3:55 remaining.  Western Boone senior 6’5 center Caleb Weber then delivered two free throws to give the Stars a lead they would not relinquish at 56-55.  With just under two minutes remaining, Stars junior sharpshooter Aaron Vaughn made five quick points (a lay-up off a nifty in-bounds play and a delicious three).  From there, Frankfort (5-5, 1-1) was forced to foul.  With the Stars already in the double bonus, Western Boone converted on 8 of 10 charity tries the final 90 seconds to seal the deal.

Western Boone placed their four “stars” in double figures.  Vaughn led on 6-9 (4-5 from behind the arc) shooting for 18 points.  Senior Cory Macbeth was also a stellar 6-9 from the floor while scoring 16 points.  Seniors Drew Pearson and Weber both finished with 15 points.  Weber concluded the evening with a double-double by securing a team-high 10 boards.  Coach Rodkey said it best, “We played with a lot of poise.  We expect that especially from those three seniors.”  The Stars team plays just as it is coached – under control with confidence.

Frankfort was led in scoring by junior standout Stevie Loveless’ game-high 21 points.  Fellow senior Jack Warwick contributed a hard-working 20 points.  The 6’6 Loveless also recorded a game-high 12 rebounds.

The Hot Dogs complete a terrific weekend of home basketball when they return to action this evening against Hoosier Heartland opponent Rossville.  The JV game begins at 6:00 PM.  This game is featured as “Cram Case Arena” night.

Frankfort athletic director, Craig Fisher, and company put-on an excellent show.  Fisher reminded me just how important the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association decision was to request every Indiana high school basketball program put on a Coaches vs. Cancer night.  Since its inception, Coaches vs. Cancer has raised over $23 million for cancer research.  What the colleges began in the early 90’s is now being followed at the interscholastic level.  Congratulations to all!

Western Boone also returns to action tonight when they host Mid-Indiana Conference Hamilton Heights.  Tip time is 7:30 PM.

GBB: Stoms Free Throws Finish Stars

FRANKFORT – Senior Jennifer Stoms calmly sank two free throws with 5.7 seconds remaining to allow the Frankfort Hot Dogs to defeat the visiting Western Boone Stars 50-48 in Sagamore Conference play Jan. 11.

Everett N. Case Arena hosted a terrfic seesaw contest that involved eight ties and 11 lead changes.  The Coaches vs. Cancer event saw Frankfort improve to 11-5 overall and 4-0 in the conference.  Frankfort’s victory places them in a first place tie with Crawfordsville.  Western Boone falls to 11-3 and 2-2.

The final 3:03 of the final stanza reflected the entire game.  Trailing 46-45, Frankfort missed two three-point attempts before freshman Alex Thompson made two free throws after being fouled on a put-back attempt.  Western Boone seized back the lead when senior center Elizabeth Mercer answered on a Stars well-executed in-bounds play under their own basket.  Hot Dogs junior Brittney Warmoth then made one of two free throws to tie the score at 48. Both teams traded missed field goals and the Stars made a costly turnover (their 15th) before Stoms’ heroics.

Warmoth did get one final shot away at the buzzer.  Her 8′ baseline shot was blocked by senior Tasha Albaugh.

The Hot Dogs were led in scoring by Warmoth and Thompson.  Both underclassmen finished with 13 points.  Hero Stoms scored 10 points.

Western Boone placed two scorers in double figures.  Senior Kassie Yates scored a game-high 15 points.  Mercer concluded the evening with 13 points.  Mercer may be the best surprise in the conference.  The tall, rangy performer runs the floor well.  Mercer is still developing her inside offensive presence – yet – she already demonstates excellent range.  Mercer knows how to defend inside the paint.

Following the game, Stoms reflected on her tension-filled moment at the free throw line.  She exclaimed, “I am a senior.  The team expects me to come through in those situations.  I was calm.”  Stoms is hopeful her basketball career will continue in college.  The three-sport participant (Stoms also participates in cross country and track and field) talked about what the team needs to do to be ready to win 3A Sectional 20.  “We need to continue to relax and work hard in practice.”

GBB: Composure leads Frankfort to 57-56 win over Lebanon

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director

When starting point guard and floor leader Jennifer Stoms went down with an ankle injury early in the season, Frankfort coach Ed Niehaus chose to view it as a potential positive. He said the necessity of other players stepping up and dealing with changing roles would pay dividends in the long run.

Coach Niehaus would appear to be a profit after Frankfort’s 57-56 victory over Lebanon on Jan. 4 in the return of Maggie Boyer to the Tiger lineup.

Stoms is back and clearly set the tone early for her Hot Dog teammates while Boyer netted eight first quarter points for Lebanon. The result was a high scoring and entertaining first quarter that ended with the visiting Tigers holding a 19-17 advantage.

The battle continued until midway through the second quarter when Stoms picked up her third foul with Lebanon leading 22-21. The question was whether Frankfort could withstand the attack of Boyer and her mates for the remainder of the half without their leader on the floor.

It seemed a valid question when Lebanon went on a 6-1 run to stretch the lead to 28-22. Niehaus’ prophecy, however, proved to be right on the mark. The Lady hot dogs gathered themselves and behind the combination of five points from sophomore Clair Howe and the floor play of freshman Alex Thompson, they fought back to tie the game at 33 going into intermission.

Thompson took charge at the offensive end early in the third, breaking a 35 all tie with eight straight points. Things appeared to be going in Frankfort’s direction until the same challenge would again rear its head.

With the score 43-37, Stoms picked up her fourth foul, followed quickly by the fourth on Howe. Lebanon used the opportunity to bridge the quarters with an 11-2 run and take a 48-45 lead early in the fourth.

Stoms reentered the fray and the battle was on. A gritty defensive effort by both teams led to a 56-56 tie with less than ten seconds to play. At that point Lebanon was whistled for a foul that sent another Howe, Brook this time, to the line.

She netted the second of her free tosses and Boyer’s last second attempt on the baseline did not connect. The Hot Dogs gained their biggest win of the year, 57-56.

Hoosier Authority talked to the backcourt tandem of Stoms and Thompson after the game. You can see that interview in the video player on this page.

BB: Fast start leads Frankfort past Lebanon 61-52

By Mike McGraw
Executive Director

Thank goodness for fast starts. The Frankfort Hot Dogs hit eight of their first eleven shots on Jan. 4 as they raced out to a 20-5 lead over visiting Lebanon with two and a half minutes still left to play in the opening quarter.

At that point it was time for an object lesson, if it seems to easy to be true, it probably is. The Tigers answered with a 16-5 blitz over the final minutes of the quarter to cut the lead to 25-22 after one period.

Starting in the second quarter, the game suddenly took on a grind it out mentality that left the tough minded Tigers in the fray for the remainder of the night. The game stayed close throughout the quarter. Lebanon used perimeter sniping to stay within striking distance while stepping up their play on the defensive end.

Midway through the stanza, Frankfort responded with an increase in ball pressure of their own, finally carving out a 38-30 halftime lead.

If it seemed the second quarter had become a struggle to score for both squads, the third nearly came to a standstill. Both teams managed just eight points in the quarter and Frankfort led 46-38 heading into the fourth.

Lebanon made its move early in the final period, scoring the first four points to close within four points, 46-42. It was as close as the Tigers would get as Frankfort used their dominant inside game to keep the visitors at bay the remainder of the way.

Effective free throw shooting led to the eventual 61-52 final.

After the game, Frankfort coach Jason Good actually seemed pleased with the offensive effort of his team. His questions concerned the Hot Dogs defense. You can see his comments in the video player on this page.
